- SCAN Health Plan for Seniors
SCAN Health Plan started in 1977 when a group of senior activists in Long Beach, California got together, determined to improve access to the care and services they needed so they could stay as independent as possible. They brought together experts in medicine, gerontology, psychology and social services and formed the Senior Care Action Network, a not-for-profit health plan for people with Medicare. Unfortunately the current management of SCAN has not been as thoughtful as that original group of senior activists in making the health plan as good for its senior members. In 2015 they angered many members by changing the primary care physicians available and also upset them even more by changing vision coverage from VSP to Eyemed. Most independent optometrists are part of the VSP network and not part of EyeMed. Read more about this on Dr. Elman's blog page. It is a Medicare Advantage Plan HMO which current Medicare recipients can enroll in only between October 15–December 7.
